An orangery is distinguished from a conservatory by means of a flat solid roof that conceals a decorative mini roof known as a roof lantern. The roof of the orangery is hidden from view by a decorative cornice that rises above the flat section. These traditional buildings are quintessentially European having first been designed by the Dutch and then adopted by the British nobility and landed gentry as a “must have” for their stately homes. Orangeries, as the name suggests, were designed to host exotic plants like orange trees that were brought into the UK by British seamen returning from foreign lands. Although in warmer climates orange trees tended to be planted in the surrounding gardens.
